No start, occasional backfiring

I've looked thru all the posts and can't find my specific issue.
'03 w/17K miles. Sat in weather 2-3 years before I bought it. I've replaced the magneto, stator, pulse coils, rectifier, battery, wiring harness (PO had rigged some mods unsuccessfully) and plugs.
Bike is original now.
I'm getting fuel to carbs (I can drain bowls at will). New plugs are barely getting wet when I try to start the bike. 1 out of 5 start attempts will get an occasional backfire. I have a new battery and have verified I have GOOD spark at plugs. I can't get it to start. Only turns and occasionally backfires.
Any suggestions? I'm at the point of removing the carbs, but I HATE working on carbs. Any suggestions prior to that?

Try some starting fluid to get it started once.
I have a couple of lawnmowers that are hard to start after sitting over the winter, but once started with a shot of ether and run long enough to mow the yard they seem to start easily for the rest of the summer.

Thank you, I have tried that. Looking to not remove the carbs if I can avoid it.

More than likely the pilot jets are clogged from the gas breaking down from the long term storage.

So, vulcan1999, you're strongly suggesting I remove and clean the carbs? If I do that, anything else I should do while I have them off?

Don't need to remove the carbs to use starting fluid.
Just take 3 screws out of one of the air filter covers to take it off.

If it's sat for 2-3 years, then the carburetors absolutely need to come off for a thorough cleaning. You may be able to get it started with starter fluid, but it will never run right until they've been carefully cleaned piece by piece. It's worth the time and effort.

Or take out plugs and put a small shot of ether down each cylinder

Is your battery an AGM battery?try to isolate what might be another issue before ripping off the carbs.
