Air Cleaner housings almost blew apart....

Greetings, all...

Today I reinstalled the carbs and had the engine running for a couple of minutes before noticing a small fuel leak from the petcock mount on the tank. Removed tank to investigate later.

Went to crank her over again....heard the starter motor engage, try to turn over...then an ungodly backfire blew out both sides of the ears and almost took the housings apart. There was light smoke emanating from the air cleaner housings.

Has anyone ever experienced this? Thoughts?

Thank you for your time.....Uncle Dave

Roger that. I'm gonna leave it on the tender tonight and check again in the morning. I suppose it could have been worn down enough to produce weak spark at the time of the incident.
