Reserve

A friend of mine that has a 2002 VN750 says he gets about 130 on a tank of gas without reserve. But he doesn't know how much he gets on reserve. I know this might vary from bike to bike but what is the average on the reserve.

Grace and Peace to you!

In my experience once you have to turn it to the reserve, start looking for a gas station. You can go for miles on reserve, but why chance it?

Say you have a 3.6 gallon tank. Suppose that you can run out 3 gallons before hitting reserve. If you get 130 miles before hitting reserve that would 130/3 = 43.33 miles per gallon. You have .6 gallons left once you hit reserve. 43.33 x 0.6 = 26 miles before you are bone dry. So to be on the safe side, once you switch to reserve find a gas station within 15 miles.

I used to get 140+ before hitting reserve. But I also had some washers under the back tank bolt to raise the tank a little so it would clear my pod air filters. So I may have had less reserve. YMMV....literally.

well I just remembered that I have a tw200 petcock and my friend has the vn750 petcock. The tw200 is shorter on the main tank than the one that came with the bike. I guess I have to remember to reset the trip odometer and test it for myself.

I hit reserve around 132-138 miles and have ridden up to 20 miles on reserve several times. The bike then takes 3.1- 3.3 gal. I only play this game when close to home but I've never run out of fuel.

3.6 gallons! I've been thinking it was 2.6 this whole time. I know it's foolish but I always ride on reserve and just fill up around 100 miles, which is consistently between 1.9 and 2.1 gallons. I guess I'll try it on run tomorrow and see how far until I need to flip it to reserve.

1991 VN750, purchased 5/5/15, 9092 miles
