so i need new filters... and i started it w/out them - question

will runnin the VN w/out filters to test it cause it to run lean?

finally got her started and was at idle sounds great, when i rev her... BAM! backfires galore.

think its just cause theres no airfilter present? (box is still there, just filters are gone)

also, if i get a K&N do i need to adjust the carb at all for more airflow?

thanks!

It shouldn't be that lean but it may if your carbs are on the ragged edge though usually the bike is rich.
If you do the ear shave, you will need to rejet the carbs.

"ragged edge" as in - in need of a rebuild/cleaning?

so stock filter replacement w/K&N = no rejetting
ear shave = rejetting

sound right?

It may be that your high speed jets are partially clogged. A Seafoam treatment will probably correct this.
You are correct, filter replacement, no change.
Ear shave=change jets. This is because you are now allowing much more air into the system and the bike is set up for more restricted air flow.

I took a ride with just the chrome covers off the filters, filters in place. The bike wouldn't go above 4k rpm's.
I would think with no filters at all, you'd have troubles, but will run.
