cant open fuel cap

Try as I might I cant get the gas cap open. Just got this bike as a basket case and working on getting it together and running but i cant get the damn cap to open. Using key that works on locks and ign. Put in in and turn clockwise while pushing cap down. It turns about 1/8-1/4 turn and thats it. Tried graphite first then liq. wrench but the wench wont open. Grrrrr. Hep me Hep me

The key on my cap only turns a 1/4 turn to open. When you have it turned have you tried to pull up on it at all?

Yeah I have tried it. Pull up after cap is pressed down while turning key. Its almost like locking tab isnt releasing. It feels like key cyl is working as it should but it will not open.

We have that problem on the 86. Try installing the key only part of the way in and turning. It works for us.

Here's what I had to do...

I was a good boy and had an extra key made for my 95 and put the original in a safe place. So I went on a ride, needed gas and, as is was, in the middle of nowhere. The new key worked the ignition but not the gas cap.

To shorten the story, I ended up pounding out the hinge pin on the cap and taking it to a key maker to fit the ignition key to the cap. $20 but worth it. Use a flat punch or you will bugger up the hinge pin getting it out.

try pushing down on the gas cap (and holding it down) as you turn the key. This will remove some of the presure off of the lock.

I'd guess that it's not the same key for the other parts as the gas cap.
Did ya only get the one key for it??
If ya can get it off at the hinge, a locksmith should be able to re-key the lock.

That is strange. Something must have got disconnected in the lock then.
Good luck with it. Maybe it'll be an easy fix
