Just a comment or reserve capacity

I did search old post for this topic, and did not find one. I refuel at 100 mile max. Because I ride the mountains and secondary roads. I did have to switch to reserve today, 1/4 mile from gas station. I have read our reserve is .6 gal. When I refueled from just on reserve, 2.74 gal. I allways fill to the same point, 1/8" above bottom of fill neck sitting on bike level. So, 3.6 gal total - 2.74 gal would mean reserve = .86 gal. give or take some. So @ 50 mpg, hopefully a station is closer then 43 miles. I was wondering how far up the fill neck is 3.6 gal?

I would agree that 140 miles is about the limit, depending on riding conditions.
I don't take it that far.

my last long ride I managed to need reserve.. used it for about 5 miles.. filled to the about the same as you (just short of filler neck). was still under 3 gallons.

I am guessing at this time the figures for size of the reserve are off?

i have pushed the reserve for about 25 easy riding miles but i dont recommend it and i only get around 35 to 40 mpg due to my jets being 142.5 mikuni mains and 42 keihin pilots
with extremely free flowing k&n drop ins on a modified air box and vance and hines pipes

NR Yup @ 35-40 mpg .86 gal would be 30-34 miles. 25 miles is cutting it close especially if in non familiar territory

I hit reserve 2.7 gal down, I've ridden reserve an additional 30 miles in an area I know well just to test it, guess I was in a testing mood that day.

Years ago I did similar......carried a qt. of gasoline just in case. LOL

When I first started riding and my bike was still stock I went over 150 miles on a tank. But I was babying it. Typically now, I have to switch to reserve at about 130-135. I do fill mine up the neck though if I know I'm going to be riding for 10 miles or more before I park it. If you fill it up the neck too much and then put it on the side stand, gas will overflow out of the vent tube.

I once switched to reserve thinking I should have about 20 miles left. I made it to work, but on the way home it died again after a few blocks. That was 11 miles. About 9 of those were on the freeway going 70-75. Now when I hit deserve I slow to 60.

Garage
When I lived in New York, I had a 30 mile commute to work. If I forgot to fill up after a couple of days of riding, I would switch to reserv about 6 miles from work, ride all over post (probably another 5 or six miles total) and still have enough gas to make it 30 miles to the gas station by my house where the engine would die at the first pump.
