What's this knob do?

Hay, I've been reading on here about how you turn the air screws to adjust the mixture on the carbs. Most of what I have read says that their should be a " cap" like thing u have to drill off to get at them. On my bike I have a knob on the left side of the carb assembly that the dealer I bought the bike off of said I shouldn't mess with as it supposedly adjusted something on the carb. Being new to moorcycles I took his word for it at the time and haven't touched it.

I was just wondering if this knob was attached to the air mixture screws or if it went to something else on the carb. I sometimes have a hard time starting the girl up when she's cold, but takes off on the first crank when warmed up. I was thinking of trying to adjust her a little to try and get a little more cooperation out of her.

I've included a pic. What's the verdict on the knob. Tinker with it or leave it alone?

Keep her rubber side down.

Knob on the carbs adjusts the idle speed by opening up the carb butterflies a tiny bit. Nothing to do with the mixture screws.

That knob adjusts the engine idle. Set idle at about 1200 rpm.
