Tank still leaking, different place
This bike has been more of a project for me, and its making me crazy, especially with the temperatures dropping and it approaching my favorite time of the year.
The previous owner (a friend of mine) was selling it because he was on orders for Egypt. A couple of months before we started talking about selling it to me, the tank developed a leak at the base near the bolt flange under the seat (yellow arrow). He and another friend brazed the tank, however it was still leaking. The hole was between the flange and the bottom of the tank. He knocked off $250, and I filled the space with JB Weld.
Between vacation to the beach, high temperatures and a ridiculously busy work schedule, I haven't had time to do any more work on the bike (the carbs got gummed up in the meantime). Well, a couple of weeks ago, I pulled the bike off, pulled an ear, and used carb cleaner to get the carbs in better shape (combined with SeaFoam and riding, hopefully things will clean themselves out).
I noticed an occasional puff of smoke coming from the left side exhaust pipe where it connected with the engine. I didn't think about it much, because I had filled it from a gas can, and leaked a couple of drops on the tank. However, when it persisted, I started investigating and found that the tank was still leaking. So I pulled the tank [again] and found the paint underneath was bubbled near the front left flange (green arrow).
I drained the tank and used a Dremel to clean off the paint and primer and put gas back into the tank, reattached and ran the bike, but have not been able to get the tank to leak. I think the dremel gave me a false seal wherever it was leaking from near the front.
At this point, since my wife is getting tired of the odor of gas in the garage, I will probably have the tank pressure tested and see if they can find and fix the leak(s).
Recommendations? Am I missing an obvious answer?
