Carb Backfire Whoo-HOOOO!!

So I'm back outside yesterday trying to breathe life back into my '86 VN750...

... I seem to have a fuel-flow problem from the petcock to the carb, but I want to make sure it runs before I invest more time into the bike.

I loosened the #2 (front) cylinder carb boot and sprayed some starting fluid into the throat, just to see if it would catch...

Crank-crank-crank-crank-BOOM! Big flash of fire, the smell of flash-burned hair on my knuckles, but no start....(caught the can on fire, too...THAT was interesting!)....*I'm fine, though.

Why would I backfire through my carb? Stuck valves? Timing off? A loose nut behind the screwdriver...?

Lean mixtures burn hotter an earlier (including pre-ignition.) At some point the mixture ignites in the combustion chamber with the intake valves open.

I once was watching a neighbor fix his riding mower. He got the thing running and out of nowhere, a flaming gas can comes rolling out into the street. I was like holy sh*t! Thankfully, the can did not explode; just burned itself out.

At least it was knuckle hair and not an eye-brow.

I only understand what I don't understand.
