Fuel Cap / Key Problem

I'm trying to open the cap on my tank. Since I have had the bike I have yet to open it. On every other bike I have had, the key goes all the way in and then you turn. This one I am confused or have a blocked keyway? As seen in pic, this is far as the key can go in and farthest to the right it goes is to the dot on right. I would assume normally it would go all the way in and turn just past the arrow on the right. Is there possibly a broken key in it or is the retracting arms on the cap ceased or both? I already fractured the original key I was given trying to open, and it also wasn't that strong. I don't want to brake more keys. How can I open it? Thanks!

Try pressing down on the cap as you slowly turn to the right, could spray a little wd40 in the keyway too, my key does not go all the way in either.

That's good to know. I doused it with wd-40 and worked the mechanism a week ago. I will play with it more over the weekend.

Are you sure it is correct key?

I'm pretty sure. It is the ignition key, the cargo key/helmet lock key doesn't turn it at all.

Locks get changed a lot,or tumblers. I think normally the ignition, fuel cap, and helmet key is the same, tool box different, or at least on my 04 was like that. Took me about 3 minutes to alter that cylinder so now 1 key fits all 5.

That's true, it is possible. I have many other things to do to the bike this weekend. In between things I will try working it some, if I don't free it I will take it to the locksmith.

I had the same issue and couldn't get it to work. I had to beat a screwdriver in the key slot and turn. I eventually purchased a new lock.

all the lock cylinders are supposed to be keyed a like from the factory... as far as the sticking gas cap key... it looks like you need to take it apart and lube/clean the tumblers, and reassemble with the key in.. or get a new lock.

I have an 86 model and one key fits all the locks, looks like your locks are all different
