Black smoke, gas out of the right ear, turns on and dies

Well, I got it to start only to find some problems. It seems something's wrong with the fuel system... I got some black smoke coming out of the pipes, and I got the bike idling and revving pretty well but then it just died after a bit.

At some point, fuel started coming out of the right ear, so I'm guessing it came out through the vents.

So I need some suggestions on what to look at, and I'm also wondering how I'm supposed to check if the floats are set right.

Hope you guys can help me out here, I'm spending more on gas for the car than what I'm earning right now!

Oh, I'd really like a link to a store where I can purchase carb o-rings and possibly a float valve. When I took my carbs apart I noticed that the float valves have a spring loaded rod that makes contact with the tang on the floats... one of these spring loaded rods doesn't push in at all. The other pushes in with a little restriction from the spring, but the other one just doesn't move at all. I'm thinking this might make it malfunction (?).

Sorry Ceal that I can`t offer much help on the specifics of how to fix the carb, but here is a link to Bike Bandit:

$32.51 for the valve? Thought it'd be a bit cheaper... oh well... u_u

Thanks for the link Gordon! I always purchase from eBay, so I don't have many motorcycle parts sites bookmarked and never know where to order stuff from.

yea, I had completely forgotten about that valve... weird thing is, it must have been like that for a long time now and the bike was rideable before... Not the smoothest bike out there, but it did it's job lol.

Still, hope I can keep fixing it (even if it will be a slow process) now that I have a steady income

Click on LINKS in the header at the top of any page and you will get this links directory.
https://www.vn750.com/links/index.php

Scroll down a bit to VENDORS and click on it.
Then there are about 15 to chose from.

Cheapcycleparts is another that many use.

I have a couple of more I can put links to as well.

http://www.indyoem.com/default.asp ......( seems to have the cheapest prices on many OEM parts, but I can`t comment on how his shipping times and prices compare)

Wow thanks! I never even knew that part of the site existed lol.

I managed to fix the flat needle though woohoo! I saved a week's paycheck lol.

I just pressed it real hard (knowing I might screw it up, but I decided to take the chance anyway) and suddenly the rod went down and released this weird smell, which I think might be what 20 year old gas smells like, and then it started working fine, the rod comes out again as soon as pressure is relieved and it goes down smoothly without excessive pressure on it. I actuated it a whole bunch of times to see that it didn't stick again and it seems it's doing alright!

Now to try and set the float level per the manual's instructions. I just hope I get it right and not have to take off the carbs another 5 times again u_u

I must say, I'm getting pretty fast at taking them off though...
