Ear Shave Jetting High Elevation

Hello all, first off I want to say thanks for all the info posted. This site and members have been a huge help. I just finished my ear shave on my 86, I live at 5280 ft and need jetting help. Right now Its at 135 main 38 pilots, needles need to be set. With factory pro needles clips should be at third position? Also Its degoated w/ straight pipes, coastered, and now shaved. At this elevation should I go with 138 mains maybe a 138 front and 140 rear???

The rule of thumb is above 1500 feet up to 2000 feet one size SMALLER on the main jet, then one size SMALLER for every 2000 feet in height. In your case you would have to start at factory specs, then factor in your mods, then factor in sea level.

Thats where I get lost lol. I figure if everyone else runs 140 mains and 40 pilots after the ear shave then I should go with 138 mains and 38 Pilots?

Right Now Im at 135 mains i think my pilots are stock but when I rejetted the first time the main was at 125 which was to lean with the straight pipes. I went to 135 and after some issues did the shave. I know my needle clips were wrong but 2000 to 4000 rpm range is acting like its not getting enough fuel. should I adjust the needles and see or up the pilot? Im also thinking maybe got o 138 mains

You're going in the right direction but it's hard to give you a precise answer. Guys running 140 and 40 may be at 246 feet like me, maybe a 1000 feet, maybe 2000 feet, maybe 100 feet. You're at nose bleed level and your bike would not run the same with the same mods. My bike is stock, and if yours was, you would need mains almost 3 sizes smaller than me. That's huge. My suggestion is go to a good Bike shop in your area and ask them how many sizes smaller they go on stock bikes ( without fuel injection ). Then you can add for bigger jet size for your mods, then you can subtract in jet size for your sea level.

Thanks for the reassurance, sometimes thats all one needs lol. I'm going to lift the tank off again and set my needles properly. Right now @ 135 mains I should be about right according to the info you gave. I have my needles set at stock height could be why shes hateing life around 1/3 throttle. I'll post my settings when finished for others

I've done the shave, but still no expert...
Seems to me the stock 135/38 should be fine at that altitude. How far out are the air mixture screws. You mentioned starving @ 2K to 4K...I think you're still using slow jet at those RPMs....what's higher RPM like?

The higher rpms are great, I changed my needle clips (factory pro) so they're at the 3rd clip with 3 washers. Seems much better, theres still a small stutter in there (near 1/4 thr). Im still messing with the air/fuel screws.

Well now I'm scrathching my head again...Needle is set at third position with 3 washers on top. Even with the air/fuel screws at 3 front, 3 1/2 rear Im still getting a lot of lean popping and it stumbles in 2nd gear near 4k 1/4 throttle if I hit the throttle more shes fine but those other cars rear ends just dont move quick enough to keep riding like that lol So maybe the needle needs to be raised one clip? or are my pilots to small?

Pilots ( slow jet ) might be too small. Main jet seems ok. Recheck your float. Make sure it's at factory spec.
