I am having a similar issue with my 05. I recently ran 93 through it, and on decel the rpms would spike up, backfire, and slowly return to normal rpms. I was told it was bad gas, and some users on the forum said our bikes needed 87. I drained the gas, filled it with 87 and a tad of seafoam, and she is running at about 85%... as aposed to the 65% before!

Gas would be the first place I would inspect. Good luck!

Yes, stick with 87 octane gas, that`s what the vn750 was designed for.
Higher octane gas is ONLY required when the engine needs it to avoid pre-ignition or "knocking".
The higher octane is designed to be HARDER TO IGNITE, so will often actually run worse and dirtier in the vn750.
