New Petcock

Was the same petcock used on every year of the VN750? In other words, if I purchase an 87 model instead of an 86, same fit?

it will fit.. you can also try this one for a Yamaha.

but its a free flow petcock so you would need to cap off the vent hose and be sure to turn it off everytime you turn the bike off.. but its cheaper than the rebuild kit for our petcock.

The early ones had Prime/On/Reserve, while later ones switched to Off/On/Reserve. However, they should all work the same during normal operation, and I believe it was in the early '90s when they switched (meaning the '86 and '87 should be the same).

I believe 85-89 petcocks had the PRIme position.
But any vn750 petcock from 1985 to 2006 can be interchanged onto any model year bike.
