Rust in Tank

I read the Vulcan Verses and the directions do not state to keep the bolt from touching the inside of the tank. Should the bolt touch the tank and stay shorting out or should it dangle freely like my boys when wearing boxers?

I am assuming the latter.

IIRC the bolt is NOT supposed to touch the tank. Someone else may want to verify this.

I did the rusty tank fix it up job, and no don't let the bolt touch the tank. It won't cause any sparks or at least it didn't for me, but it did cause my battery charger to short out after it touched a few times. Best idea is to when charger is OFF set the bolt/wire into the tank opening take a piece of tape and tape the wire to the tank to make sure it won't move around and the bolt will not touch the tank. Then turn your charger ON and let it do it's thing.

To add into this topic though I would recommend something like RED KOTE or something like that to add a liner to the inside of the tank as well.

Good luck with the rusty tank repair.

RED KOTE?

From VN750 Yahoo Vulcan Verses:
This process only eats up rust, not steel. It converts rust to black oxide, which is a more inert material. Unlike acid etching, the surface left behind is rust-resistant. Acid etched steel left bare is much more likely to re-rust. This process works well, the chemicals required are safe if properly handled, the tank shouldn't need to be coated afterwards (unless it's leaking), and the time required is minimal.

X2. That`s my understanding too DEUCE. The black oxide coating left inside the tank is more resistant to corrosion and no other coating or liner is needed.

This process is working beutifully. I have my charger set to the 40 amp setting and the bolt is filthy. Unfortunately the charger has a 90 minute timer so I have to keep resetting it instead of "Set it and Forget it".

I know it said that but for my ease of mind I put that liner in the tank just as like a security blanket type of thing. Plus my tank did have a small crack in it that was welded, but made the liner a little extra think right in that area.
