Missing ear, will it run right?

Hello all, i bought my bike after the PO laid it down (thats how i got it so cheap), and the right side ear was smashed in roughly a million pieces lol. Im trying to get it running right, i just went and ordered a new pilot jet for it, the old one was clogged solid with something very hard, it wouldnt come out after soaking it for 2 days. I cleaned and inspected the carbs while they were out, so i know thats good. The carbs are still out, waiting on the jet from the stealership. I did have it running before i pulled the carbs so i know it runs. I am just curious if missing the ear will cause a big issue with the air/fuel ratio that it wont idle or run right? I wont be riding it do to the weather here, but i would like to get it running and idling good before i start dumping a bunch of money into it. Thanks for all the help, and sorry its so long.

I ran without the chrome covers on the ears and the bike would run really rough above 3500 or so RPMs.
But.... it would run and ride below that no problem and idle fine.

So..... IMO, you'll atleast be able to get it running w/o it

Without the ear you are letting more air in and likely creating a over lean mixture, which may let the bike run, but can over heat it.

Not to mention if there is no filter in place you are letting in dust and crap into the motor.

So, do not run the bike until you replace the filter....in some way. Many here have done an "earshave"...this is when you scrap the stock air filters/boxes and replace them with filters that bolt directly to the carb mouths.

You might be able to have the bike run safely by plugging up the intake boot to the missing air box and just running the bike with the left air box.
