Angry Fuel/Air troubles

I am completely stumped and looking for help. I bought a '93 recently and needed to immediately replace the battery. I rode it home, which was fine, then replaced the battery yesterday when it arrived.

Now, bearing in mind that up to this point the ONLY thing I have done is to change the battery....Now the bike will not run at all unless I keep it under full choke.

I fiddled with the mix screws slightly but didn't want to get em way outta whack. I was going to compare them to my '95 but mine still has the little covers over the screws. I have just about talked myself into gettin past em and seeing for myself but felt I should ask y'all first.

Any ideas?

Aha!

Out of frustration I sat down again and went over every single thing I could think of that would cause (or fix) this problem. Several "might as well, can't hurt" tasks came to mind so I drained the carb bowls and checked for detritus.

There were no obvious signs of dirt or rust but there was a bit of wispy floaters...kinda like backwash. That got the bike to run with the choke off but it still smoked like a demon.

Another "can't hurt" idea was to drop SeaFoam in and cruise up the freeway about 30m each way. The deed is done! smoke is gone, idles practically perfect.

Oh, and I realized that I had done one thing I had not mentioned. The night before my wife and I took our bikes out for a wee ride and she flicked the valve over to reserve for a bit then back to On. Apparently there was enough funky crud hanging out in the reserve pickup tube that settled into the bowls overnight to cause this.

you may call it over protective....but atleast everyother week....more like every week i flip to reserve and ride a bit......i go through 3 tanks a week so... but it keeps stuff clean

No doubt Anthony. I admit to being skeptical of the claims on the bottle but the forum convinced me it was worth a shot.

Put in in your oil!
Put it in your gas!
Put it in your injectors!
Put it in your 2-stroke mix!
Use on your breakfast cereal! (okay not really that one)

Still, I was amazed to find that the product claims were met or exceeded by reality.

it increased my MPG from about 40 to 50...
