Confused about Re-Jetting.

Hello again fellas. OK I have read most of the posts on this issue and am more confused than ever. My '86 has the stock replacement K&N filters, Vance & Hines Cruzers exhaust and has been coastered(exhaust air injection has been removed). I don't think the previous owner re jetted it when he installed the K&N's and I did the V&H pipes and coastering. I still get a TON of BACKFIREING on deceleration. I am thinking the bike must be running way too LEAN. So since I am getting my carbs syncronized soon my question to you is.... with the mods I have listed here what is the proper size main and pilot jets that I need. I know your supposed to run one size up in number in the rear carb due to heat. I want jets that will work with the mods but at the same time not too big of jets to make my gas mileage suffer. On my trip to St.Louis last year I kept averaging 58 mpg at fill ups and I really liked that. I don't understand anything about putting shims on the needles or replacement needles? Is this a must when rejetting? I haven't done any carb work so this is all new to me. Also what are the proper settings for the fuel/air adjustment screws with these mods that I have done? Any help from you guys would be much welcome. Thanks Again!

#135 main jet #40 pilot jet and set pilot screws @ 2 turns out, you can do 1 shim under the needle. Shiming the needle improves throtle response.
