hesitation from marbling trick

Hey guys i tried the marble trick today to try and stop some of the decel backfiring. I now have a new problem. the bike hesitates from 4-5k rpms. any ideas? on the right side of the bike im not sure if i replaced the reed in the right direction does anyone know which direction it should be faceing?


could this be the cause of the hesitation if it is in the wrong direction?


btw.. i removed the marbles just to see if it would help the hesitation but it did not solve the problem. besides the popping on decel the bike ran perfect before i tried the marble tric.

hopefully it is just the reed facing the wrong direction.

Can anyone tell me the correct ways the reed valves should be facing for installation?

You need to put rubber caps 5/8" over the reed valve covers. You can buy them at Advance Auto for a couple bucks. If you don't do that then the marbling won't do much good and with the caps on it doesn't matter what direction the reeds go.

The hesitation is most likely the vent tube in the left air fiter housing. If it gets close to the housing it won't vent and you will absolutely hesitate around 4-5K. I moved mine back and taped it in place with duct tape. There are other options in the Verses.

If the popping didn't stop with the marbling, then you may have an air leak in the exhaust where it connects to the manifold. Don't over tighten the acorn nuts. You can test it by lighting a cigarette or incense stick and hold it near the exhaust with the bike running, if the smoke is disturbed then you have a leak and you'll need to replace the gasket. Popping is caused by air getting into the exhaust and on decel it's trying to be burned and explodes causing the popping.

If you "marbled" it should not make any difference which way the reed faces. Not sure why you removed them anyway if you in fact used a marble in the hose.

Perhaps you are talking about something else? The reed valve is behind the small metal plate that bolts to the top of each cylnder. A large diameter rubber hose is attached to it to supply air to the exhaust port. When you "marble" you simply remove the hose, shove in an actual glass marble (hence the name) and replace the hose. You do not remove the reed valve assembly unless you are "coastering"...which means replacing the entire reed valve assembly with a simply metal cover.

Do make sure you did not remove the vent hose running into the back of the right airbox, or that it is not shoved in too far. (most cut the end at a 45 degree angle to prevent it from botttoming out)

When you say it "hesitates" that would mean after a second or so, it then works fine.

Please explain everything you did when you marbled, perhaps that would help.

the only reason i removed the reed valves was because it made it alot easier to remove the hose because it was on there pretty tight. in the process of that I got confused as to which way to put the reed valve back in.

we are forgeting one fact on this marbling job..... wanted to make sure u capped the hose goin to diaphrams under the seat?? or put a vac cap on the vac port on the carb (not the carb vent line)

It sounds like we're talking about two different things in this thread. Marbling, is inserting two marbles, one in each hose attached to the reed valves, and putting the hoses back on, period. The other, is removing all the emissions gear and capping the open ports. I think he was marbling, however I have never heard of anyone removing the reed valves to pull the hoses off. Sounds like something else was done to cause the problem he has now while in this process. Are we 100% sure that the hesitation wasn't there before he tried the marbling? If it wasn't, then I can almost be 100% sure the marbling alone would not cause this problem, but something else was done unintentionally during the marbling process. That's my .02
