Because they seem to be missing on mine. Also, the foam filters are falling apart, so I have to get these. but was wondering if the duct ones are really needed. They are a bit on the expensive side.

I don't follow. What duct filters are you refurring to?
The foam will have to be replaced. Mine were the same way when I got my bike.

to fix the air filters you have a few options.
1. you can order OEM filters
2. you can order a k&N filter
3. goto a fabric store and get some foam and make your own.

I'd just as soon get the K&N, as I have the recharger kit for them.

All that piece does is make for a smoother air flow into the filter. It is not a filter itself.

Also, the K&N's have no advantage over stock filters, other than making your wallet lighter. Some have reported they don't filter as well as stock too.

Actually one of the advantages I can think of right off the bat that the K&N's have over stock is you never have to replace them again. And mine work just as good, if not better than stock.
