Tired of lack of power... time to repair the phantom problem.

well, the last two weekend I have gone on 'trips'. Last weekend I went 175 miles, yesterday 220 miles. Both times the bike lacks the power it had last spring when I bought it, and has a very hard time over 5k RPMs and/or 75+. Sometimes it will do 80 mph, but if there is the slightest hill she drops 10-15 mph and struggles. if I am cruising at 70 at approx 3/4 throttle, she's pretty good. However if I go to full throttle she struggles and slow right down.

I have degoated, and drilled baffles, have the K&N stock replacement air filters, and I cleaned the carbs last year.

I am thinking that if I have to pull the carbs, I will just do the ear shave and have it all out at once.

Stock jets are still in there, my 138 and 140 jets are somewhere here but got a little mixed up in the move. the bike has been running this way since the last part of last fall. It has it's spurts where it will go 90, but that's only down hill...

After seeing Dave's post and thread, I am gonna ask for the much needed help...if i have time before work tonight, I will check the plugs- they will be replaced this weekend as will be ordering some online (NGK Iridium)
I work until Friday so the weekend will be my fixing time and won't have but a few hours each day.

any help would be great!

PS- I am at a higher altitude (4400') than I was in MI, but it still runs near the same way.. I think it's lean?

The plugs look good, it doesn't appear to be running lean.
A little hard to tell on the rear, are they tan or white?

Have you given her a good dose of Seafoam?

X2- the plugs look good, definitely not looking lean. Was the bike doing this before you left Michigan? How long? Since De-goating? Since carb cleaning?
Just trying to help put 2 and 2 together here. Does the bike have plenty of zip at lower speeds, but just when you hit high rpms does it get sluggish? Or is it sluggish throughout the range?

pretty good at slower speeds... once over 50 it slows down, takes 'forever' to get to 75 most of the time.
the plugs are the 10 year old stock plugs, so I will be getting new NGK iridium plugs.
the bike did this in Michigan, I believe since the degoat mid last summer, but I can't quite remember... I cleaned the carbs, but I didn't adjust the floats as I didn't know how and I couldn't figure out how to disassemble them. I am guessing the problem started after the degoat...

The rear plugs are sorta off-white with brownish/tannish tips...

On side note- it has the MF battery, and i tried 138 jets this spring in MI with no change in performance... I am gettign about 30-35 mpg at speeds of 65-75...

Install the Iridiums and and see what happens, new wires and caps would be a good thing also.

It might just be a couple of your plugs have gone bad. That can happen and still look normal. I'd be anxious to see how she runs with the new iridiums in her. Then go from there.
If it started right after the de-goat, it would be easy to think something about the de-goat is causing it. But I've had things go bad, untouched and spent days trying to figure out what I did. Had my carbs off my kz1000 about 4 times in 2 weeks trying to figure out what I had done, cause the bike ran like crap after I put them back on the first time. Turned out a couple plug wires just quit on me. Hadn't touched them in all the process. Ordered new caps and wire and installed it and the bike ran like a dream again. Just bad timing.
