can't get her to idle on her own.

I have an 85' vulcan 700 and she is my first bike, I am mechanically inclined, so fixing her is not an issue as long as I have my manual. But the book doesn't troubleshoot everything. My problem is after she starts and I release the throttle all the way until it stops the bike quits, if I manually idle the bike with the throttle(1/8 of an inch before it stops) it stays idling, but if touch the throttle and rolls toward the front of the bike(where it stops) the bike dies. Any tips on how to fix this problem. And also, this is a great forum with a lot of knowledgable folks. Thanks for letting me register with this forum.

Do you know about the black knob on the left below the fuel tank? That is the idle adjuster. Might give that a try.

Set the idle @ 1100 rpm after it has reached operating temp.

Welcome to the forum vn700inmaine, from western Canada. Let us know if setting that idle adjustment knob works.

Thanks everyone, I tried adjusting the idle before posting my first post and it didnt seem to keep the bike from quitting, so I figured it might have been something else, but I kept saying to myself that the idle was not correct but wasn't 100% sure so I figured I'd ask the people that know more about my bike than I do. I'll tinker with the idle some more and hopefully get that problem to stop. Thanks for the info.

Welcome to the group! I'm assuming you are using the choke while starting the bike cold, right? Once the bike has warmed maybe 30 seconds, and you roll the choke off it dies? Or does it run on it's own at all with the choke? Just trying to clarify what you are telling us. Let us know!

Yes, the choke is on and after a couple minutes the bike idles on it's own, it stays running without a problem, except when you roll the throttle forward(where it stops) it quits-if I roll the throttle slightly towards me, it will idle. I still have to fine tune the idle, so hopefully that's the cause to the problem.

How long was this bike setting?? Here I go again with the dirty carb needing cleaning. I believe that the fuel delivery from the carb to the cylinder is the problem. imo

Sounds like dirty carbs. You know me... have you bathed her in seafoam yet? (the tank, I mean)
