Ear shave question

Hey all, I have a CA spec 94. I'm looking into doing the ear shave, I bought the Reed block off plates and am going to order the k&n and emgo filters. The bike is completely stock.

Is the jetting on CA models different than others? I am just above sea level. Do I really need to rejet? I am keeping the stock exhaust I feel like every article I look at says something different.

From what I gather the jetting should be 38/135 if keeping stock pipes?

I don't believe jetting is different in CA, just that you have EVAP equipment which the rest don't have. I run 135/38 with pod filters and it runs great. Haven't read the plugs, but don't really feel the need to since response and behavior is good from idle to 9k rpm+

Thanks for the reply. Am I correct in that the 38 is stock but the 135 is not? And did you shim or change anything on the needle or idle mixture?

Those sound like stock numbers. When I did my ear shave, I kept the factory pipes and had to raise my needle up (I think to the last notch) and the AFR screws are about 3.5 turns out. I'm in Mississippi but barely above sea level too.

I run 140/42 i believe and it runs great! You probably don't HAVE to rejet, but the bikes run pretty lean stock and it makes a big difference to give it a bit more juice. It just runs better across the board. And adding a shim in the needle is a good idea too! Don't be intimidated by cracking into the carbs, it's a lot easier than you'd expect.

I've worked on carbs before, and don't have an issue with it, I was just curious. I just didn't want to do the extra work if I don't need to.

Remove the CA emissions crap. I noticed an increase in performance with their removal. The response in throttle was immediate whereas before I felt like it was delayed.

2000 VN750
Digital voltmeter
Lubed spline (5k)
New tires (5k)
Pick up coils to .20mm
K&N air&oil filters
Relocate R&R
2 wire mod
Iridium plugs (7.2k)
Change oil and filter (8.6k)
Removal of the CA emissions (7.3k)
Cap Reed valves off the engine (7.3k)
Redesign stock seat (8k)
Change Engine Ice (8k)
Install KLR650 bars (8.3k)
Change final drive oil (8.3k)
Install power source & phone mount (8.5k)

Sorry man, I can't help you here. I kept my ears I added K&N's filters, and capped the Reed valves, and capped the air box under the tank. All the other hoses from the CA emissions black box I removed, along with the cylindrical thing that the 3 hoses run to, removed the "T". The hoses off the carb, I ran to the bottom of the bike.
I see a lot of threads with issues and questions after earshave about jetting, shims, mixture screws, gas mileage. Mine road great after removal!! Still getting almost 50mpg so I didn't want to go through the hassle of removing ears. Your VN750 might turn out different. I was able to do all that without removing the tank so it might be worth trying that and see what you think before you go ahead and commit to the earshave.
