where to look for short

Hi I'm new here. Having problems with my 85 700. While riding my engine will lose spark and tach drops instantly to 0 and kick back in. If I coast to stop and put in neutral starter button won't work while issue is happening. Then suddenly works again. All this is random. Need help on where to start to fix problem.

does anything else electrical quit, like idiot lights, brake lights, ect? if so, clean the inside of the ignition switch (not the lock part your key goes into, the switch itself)

Garage
Also check your grounds and your battery terminals. If they are loose that will happen, it will keep jumping around.
