12v running/brake lights

A quick question. I apologize if this is elementary electrical knowledge, but I am not certain of this.

Knowing the Vulcan has limited power to give (electrically) is it going to be an issue if I take two 12V running/brake led strip lights and hook them up to the same plugs the current running/brake light is also hooked up to? The current one is also LED.

Would this work? Wanting to put more lights on the back to be seen. But don't want to do it if it is going to cause charging issues.

Currently Using

LED's use so little power you'd have to add like 500 of them before they'd be an issue for the charging system....

I would have said 1000...

as a matter of fact, I currently have 2 incandescent bulbs on my bike.. head light, and the head light warning light on dash (only because it ALWAYS has some voltage on it, so the led would be lit constantly). everything else is LED

I would say if you changed over your 2 incandescent lamps in your factory running/brake light, then you certainly have the room to add a couple strips. if you have switched over everything, then i think you could add several spools of LED tape. I would say that maybe you should look at some different products.

the product you linked to doesn't look like it is meant to have dual intensity. so it would be on as a running light but not get any brighter when you applied the brakes. or they wouldn't work as running lights, only brake lights. but maybe that's what you want. there are simple products out there that will do both, though.

I, too, like MichiganTeddyBear, have only two incandescent lights: the headlight and the factory license plate bulb (which right now is useless as it does work but literally doesn't shed light on the license plate... but that's another story). I suppose whatever is underneath the dash to illuminate the various things might also count. Like Drew, I also have store-bought LEDs that act as running lights/brake lights/turn signals. Love them! While I just bought a light bar off of eusjma it will be some time before I add the actual lights. Even though that will add more of that electrical juice to the equation it still won't cause an issue. (Unless I get satellite-killer bulbs that could knock invaders out of orbit.) Regardless of which route you follow, store-bought or home made, you'll be happy with the extra illumination, both in numbers and brightness. It is an improvement over the factory minimal lighting, therefore safer, and also therefore makes your machine more personalized to your liking. Enjoy the results!

Thanks guys! I can at least take parts off an engine and put them back on to figure it out, electrical I am not versed in. Probably should pay more attention at YTU (Youtube University).

Those bag lights are awesome, if I ever get bags on mine I will likely get something like those. The strips I ordered will fit nicely down the frame which is why I chose them. I will be sure to post some photos when I get everything in and installed.

Got some $4 LED tail bulbs from dealextreme ... no bueno, not nearly bright enough, but I've been running them and other riders say they're good enough to see. Still no bueno. Tried some cheap ones off ebay, same thing, not bright enough.

Now the little license plate bulb from the same place, plenty bright, brighter than the extra wattage incandescent I had in there. The bulb just has the bayonet part that goes in the socket, and the LEDs are flat on top of that. Almost nothing to grip when you put it in, but they work well. Seems like that bulb was $2-3.

Lookin' forward to seeing your pics Freddy. Don't see me shelling out $200 for a pair of LED strips anytime soon, too many projects.
