Voltage output intermittently jumps to 18+ volts

I have a question for the electrical masterminds on here.

What is the off-hand impression of the electrical output on the VN 750 intermittently jumping to 18+ volts and then returning to normal.

This happens most often when the temp is below the middle of the range on the guage. It noticeably degrades engine performance when the volts are too high.

The last time I saw something like that was on a pontiac transport when the alternator was fixing to die.

Hoping it's something besides the stator goin' out. But if so, might as well do the Tuxedo mod while I'm at it.

i certainly hope not. The damned thing has less than 1,000 miles on it. Granted it's easy to change out, especially since I relocated the R/R last time, but still; it's virtually brand new. Maybe I can catch it before it fries another 6-pin connector.

Maybe, go the MOSFET route if that's what it is. Seems that the mosfet R/R is a bit more stable from what I've been reading.

Reckon, I'll break out the voltmeter... again....

check all the grounds as well... a crappy ground can cause the voltage to go wonky

Cleaned every ground and electrical connection I could find, still getting intermittently high voltage output. Well, crap.

Mosfet R/R it is I reckon. Wouldn't think that the OEM R/R's were that crappy. I guess it's had a good run though, it lasted an entire 1,200 miles before it started taking a dive.

Genuine OEM is EXPENSIVE!. any of the oem "replacement" that are sub-$100 are cheap knockoffs. for the few extra bucks, the conversion to mosfet is worth it

Yah... I found that out. The R/R I bought was an OEM from Maw Kaw instead of a third party knockoff. Well over $100, but apparently just as big a piece of trash.

The conversion to Mosfet will most definitely be worth the few extra bucks if it alleviates that particular problem.
