Noob done did it, blew out power

Hey Everybody!

So, I've been familiarizing myself with my '86 VN and have had charging system issues (killing batteries). Swapped out the R/R last week and did see some improvement in power and starting but the battery still pulled at 8 Amps when put on a charger.

The headlight went out about a week ago so I was trying to trace that. I found a Saab/Volvo Bosch Fuel Relay hooked up which I'm assuming is another mod. It appeared that a wire had come loose and...here comes the Noob part...I plugged it into the relay and then lost all power...damn! No lights, no gauges, no anything. There is a clicking from the relay itself when I hook up the negative post but that's it. I bought a new relay but that one does the same click so I guess the problem resides elsewhere.

I've been reading a lot of posts and there is excellent info here but it's been difficult to apply with all the rewiring that I'm dealing with. My next step is to pull the junction box and check that out, as the JB is positioned in a manner which will require me to remove the seat and battery bracket to access, I'm also wondering if that is another mod. Seems odd that you can't check/change fuses without removing the JB.

Then, there's the stator which I'm fairly certain is bad. I do plan to tuxedo that at some point....gotta work my way up to that though.

OK, what I'm asking is: is anyone familiar with the Fuel Relay mod I'm referring to? And, does anyone have an idea of what I might have blown out by plugging in a brown wire that was leading out the the headlight array? I know, it's a longshot, but what the heck.

Thanks for any assistance!

Fuel relay mod? Fuel delivery has no connection to the electronics on our bikes.

Maybe it's the Coil Relay Mod?

Doc was trying to sound smart by pretending to know what it was. He's just nodding his head and saying uh huh.

While you have things torn apart to do the muffler bearings make sure you run a check on the electronic step up coil for the rear compression angle. If that gets out of balance then you need to steer left for right turns and pull back on the bars when making left turns. You'll be throwing a lot more parts as you ride down the road with that problem. Remember, better safe than soccer.

and always remember, "Ride until you rot!"
**Really not sure if the Big "C" is back right now
but having to face the fact that this is a lifetime routine
going forward. Five operations done and it still continues.
