Starter sounds weird

Hey everyone I'm new here and I just purchased my first motorcycle 1986 vulcan 750, it hasn't been run in 5 years that's what the previous owner told me, I cleaned the tank ,pour gas on it and tried to start it , the battery was dead so I jump it with my car battery, I just want you guys to listen to the starter and please let me know if the starter is going bad or I just need to put a new battery on it thank you in advance.

Looks like a weak battery, if it's bad, the AGM type battery is the best way to go. Lots of posts here about AGMs.

You can fry the R/R by jumping from a running car.

Should always leave the engine off on the boost vehicle, with this bike. Doesn't always happen but the r/r can fail by jumping from a running car.

Hope you didn't buy a wet cell, AGM is Absorbed Glass Mat, has no wet acid in it.

Your starter did sound normal for having low amps supplied to it, could hear the car alt. kicking in and rpm dropping when you hit start.

You'll be much happier with it right away, and in the long run.

Been a while since I've checked, but some auto stores have them for $80-90.

Mine is the Magnapower from Advance Auto, but I bought it in 2013. The VN750 starts far better on an agm.

So it is better because acid won't corrode your bike? Or just performance?

Yes

Won't spill or leak.

Carries more voltage, even when almost dead. Loses less voltage in storage.

Provides better power during cranking so the bike starts instead of just backfiring.

There are some more advantages, just don't recall all of them. The acid in the mat is recycled back into the plates, instead of boiling or venting out and allowing the battery to go dry.
