Maybe the sidestand switch.

Or weak fuel delivery, it takes relatively little fuel to rev high in neutral compared to trying to drive.

Is it trying to die completely or doing something else?

Not sure, but if the yellow/red is still connected on the 10-pin, the sidestand switch may still be involved.

Dying completely does sound like the sidestand sw. is killing it.

What year?

No, I think that will be the same as if the kickstand was down. Would need jumpers on certain wires , I think.

Could try a shot of WD40 in the switch, or clean it.

There should be info on the site about how to jump that switch to disable it.

X3 connect the two kickstand wires together at the switch to bypass the switch.

The yellow wire on the 10 pin only triggers the headlight solenoid. It has no effect on the engine.

X - 1... i think . . . maybe...

when i took off my kickstand switch, i took it off as it poked out of the harness and removed the whole switch gizmo from the stand. Then i checked the switch itself, and... it's normally open. meaning...

when the kickstand is down, it's pressing the button in. That closes the switch and the bike won't run.
when the kickstand is up, the switch is spring pushed back out, that's normally open, i.e. its natural state.
So when i pulled it off the harness, side, i taped the two wires around each of them with some electrical tape, then taped the two already taped ends onto the harness with a little more to basically hide them.

I stand corrected if i'm wrong about this, but, please let me put my kickstand down before you push on me to lean me since i am standing corrected and stuff.
