melted battery terminal

I had trouble starting my bike the other day, to the point the battery gave out.

I pulled the seat off today intending to jumpstart it. To my surprise, the negative terminal had completely melted. There's a problem !

I have a picture up on Flickr, but I can't post the URL here yet. Go to Flickr and search for "VN750 melted battery terminal".

I bought this Yuasa battery about 18 months ago and only driven about 2000mi since then.

I know I am in for a new battery, but I don't want this to happen again.

Any ideas ?

rare but not unheard of. cause is usually poor, loose connection on the battery posts. the repeated attempts at cranking plus whatever before generated enough heat, to melt the post.

Make sure you replace the batt with a maint free battery. I'd also recommend going through all the electrical connections and making sure everything is nice and tightly connected before putting the new batt in. Something in your wiring caused the ground lead to heat up which could happen again if you just drop in the new batt without checking the wiring. Be a bummer to toast a brand new batt.

Wow, that's pretty rough, are you sure it wasn't just broken off instead of being melted?
