Stock brake/tail light wiring

I have a 1997 VN750. The previous owner totally screwed up the tail light wiring. I have taken it apart. there are 2 lights in the tail light assembly. each light has a blue, red and brown/yellow wire. The wiring harness has 2 of each of these. When i put the blue with blue and red with red and brown/yellow with the same, my brake light works, but i can not figure how to get the tail light to work at all. Both lights turn on when the foot brake is pressed. I know the tail light should be on whenever the key is turned. Please help? I also cant get the hand brake to operate the brake light, but that can wait, I guess.

Just some questions to get the troubleshooting started:

Tail light bulbs and fuses all good?

Does the headlight come on when you start the engine?

Do you have lights on in the tach/speedo and the front running lights (amber) when the key is turned on?

Have you tested the wires where they plug together under the seat?

License plate light working?

Tail light not working

Thanx. Both lights in the tail light assembly work. Both turn on when I press the brake pedal. When I start the bike, the headlight works, but the tail light does not turn on. The tach speedo lights work when key is turned. It does not have a license plate light. The wires under the seat were all chewed up. I have taken that apart, cut the wires down and am going to splice longer wires in when I figure it out. I have the light assembly off the bike and have put all the light assembly wires directly to the wires from the harness. Brake light works but not the tail/running light.

Test those wires where they come together, then dig deeper if there's no power there.

Make sure you don't have two filaments lighting in each bulb. It's possible to install the bulb wrong and get two filaments lit, causing the other circuit not to work..

Those chewed up wires are a good bet.

Test the blue wire (tail light)

Put the black lead from the meter on the battery negative, put the red lead on the blue wire. Looking for 12v dc, so the meter probably has a 20v dc setting.
