Angry Won't even try and start

My 94 Vulcan just started having this problem. I turned the key on and nothing, no dash lights or any power to accessories. If I wait to try again after a few minutes the neutral and oil lights will begin to glow faintly. If I wait a little longer they will resume full brightness until I hit the start button then they are out again. I do hear a click from under the seat when I try to start it if the lights are on. I'm thinking it developed a short somewhere and that is a circuit breaker that I hear click. All fuses are good and connections seem tight. I have not messed with any wiring on this bike. Is there a common place for them to short out? Any and all Info will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks Cliff

My 1st though is simply a drained battery (starter will click if battery is low) but the lights very slowly brightening has me puzzled. What is your battery voltage when the bike is not running (cold engine/battery) and if you jump the bike what is the voltage at 3000 rpm?

I have 12.5 volts at the battery. I didn't try and jump it as I don't think it will work, since as soon as I hit the starter button everything goes dead.

Not 100% sure but I don't think 12.5 is enough to start the bike, pretty sure it needs to be closer to 13, but the dimming lights has me confused as well. If you keep your volt meter on the battery when you try to start it does it drop significantly?

Ok, I just went and checked the voltage it is only 12.3 volts at rest. When hitting the starter it dropped all the way down to 3 volts. I only have a slow battery charger/tender and with that hooked up it will click when starter button is pushed and the lights stay on. I guess maybe my battery died just that quick, hoping it isn't the stator. I can't remember my old screen name, I hadn't really posted very much so I'm not concerned on my end about that. I just really appreciate all the knowledge that is available on sites like this.
Thank, Cliff

If you are measuring voltage on the battery terminals and its dropping to 3v when you hit the starter button, your battery is either dead or bad. Charge it completely and try again. If you get the same results, get a new AGM battery.

yea, batteries can go that quickly.. wet cells are notorious for having a cell open under load that quickly.

even AGM batteries can do it.
