R/R year model differences?

Hi, does anyone know what the differences are between pre-1993 R/R and the current model? Ron Ayers lists different part numbers for all models before 1994 (PN 21066-1055) and 1994 and up (PN 21066-1089). I have looked at the bike's wiring diagrams and they are the same. Possibly the connector type changed, or the earlier models needed a pigtail to reach the mating connector?

Also, does anyone know what the internal circuit of R/R consists of? I recall seeing an autopsy report on one a long time ago somewhere on the Web, but I cannot find that now.

First off, I wouldn't buy the OEM R/R. There are better third party R/Rs out there. Rick's and Electrosport come to mind. Other than some minor circuitry differences, I don't think there's anything else to differentiate between them, if that. I do know that for the third party suppliers, the part numbers are the same.
As far as the circuitry, it's a diode rectifier and a control circuit. The factory module was found to be poor quality which may explain why they fail the way they do.

Hey replaced my R and R about 5 months ago and actually went with OEM but not vulcan 750. The Ninja zn 600 is the exactly the same and you can find dozenss of them on ebay for 1/4 of the price. Good luck with your choice.

Thanks for that tip Redskinner. I have started to look into that option too, but it got kind of confusing. My impression is that they all do the same function and should be electrically compatible, but the pin-outs and connector are the issue of concern.

What I'd really like to do is find an R/R made for a bigger bike and adapt it to the Vulcan. I presume that a Goldwing or some full dress tourer would have a higher-wattage stator and R/R. Hopefull I could source the mating female connector to adapt my harness to it. Any suggestions?

I dont know that much about the R/R accept it changes the AC voltage from the stator to a DC voltage that will charge the battary. I would be careful with using a larger R/R if it is specfically designed for the larger stator voltage and outputs a larger charging voltage. I personally think that it wont matter which R/R you use because it is simply a RC (resistor capacitor) circuit and the output ultimatly depends on the input voltage....Once again I am not an electrical engineer but have some experience with this stuff. Wish I could be of more help and I am interested in how this turns out if you use a different R/R.
