Power issues - please help.
Alrighty... I'm at wits' end, and hopefully someone can help me. Here's the history:
Bought VN750-A10 ~2 years ago. Rode it more or less regularly for the first year, during which time it had a battery issue, so battery got replaced by a mechanic - I just discovered he put in the much praised Yuasa in.
For the last year, it's been mostly sitting in garage, as I've been spending obscene amounts of time on the road. When at home, I was usually spending some time working on it. It was regularly turned on several times a week, as I was checking to make sure nothing I mucked with disrupted the systems.
Last successful power-up was ~3 weeks ago, when machine started without a problem. Last weekend I tried to start it, but couldn't. Engine made some feeble 'turning over' attempts, then faltered. Afterwards, I could get some 'crackle/click' noises when hitting starter, but no turning over or starting up.
Suspecting an empty battery, I bought a new trickle charger (misplaced old one in the move) but when I hooked it up to the battery (still in motorcycle) I was getting red 'blinky' instead of solid - according to charger manual, red blinky simply means not charging (but is not an charging error indicator).
So, I hit Sears today, grabbed a new Diehard 44005 (Yuasa clone) and hauled it home. Filled it up with electrolyte, let it sit for couple hours, slid it into the bike, plugged in the charger... red blinky. Then I pulled the new battery out, tried charger again... red solid (charging). Then I thought of (belatedly) trying the same trick on old battery and ya betcha, red solid. Charging.
The only electrical 'mod' I did to the bike is the LED Board brake light.
At this time, I have several theories I'd like your thoughts on, and several questions:
T1) Something in the bike system is trickle-draining the battery. Because of the trickle-drain and empty battery, trickle-charger gets its juice stolen by the drain, and doesn't actually get to fill the battery.
Q1) Anything in the bike system that might be doing that?
T2) There's a short or dead fuse in the bike system, mucking with battery charge and power levels. But if there was one, wouldn't that cause problems with starting too? it used to start just fine.
Q2) Does VN750 have a fuse box and where? I've been somewhat unlucky finding it. (My Clymer is packed with hundreds of other books after the move).
Q3) Could someone list all the fuses on VN750 and their amperages?
Q4) Any 'modules' like R&R whose failure could be causing this?
Any further suggestions etc would be most warmly welcome. I'll be out of town till friday, and am hoping to come home to charged battery so I can see if bike will start with full battery.
Thanks in advance!
Found the fusebox. All 6 fuses look OK. Am I missing any fuse locations?
Charger is Battery Tender Junior Automatic.
