1985 zn700 overcharging

I really need help. I have a 1985 zn700ltd that is overcharging badly, 17+volts at idle. I have already put in a new stator, and a new regulator-rectifier. I really don't have any more ideas any help would be greatly appreciated. Btw the bike does not have the original key, just a plain on/off key switch from local parts store. No gauges either.

You still know this is a forum for the VN700/750 right? Someone here might know somethingabout your bike but honestly there might be a better forum out there for you.

Isn't the zn a straight four? It's got the same stator and regulator?

The zn7xx is the same as a vn7xx mechanically, appearance is very similar minus the chrome fenders.

Back on topic, check the battery box to engine ground located on the right aside of the bike, also make sure the battery To frame ground is tight and no corrosion or damage.. I also honoree you said you replaced the stator And r/r, but I would retest them again.

I thought the zn was an offshoot of the kz, hence an inline four? It's a ddetuned 750 tariff buster

Every thing between the two bikes interchanges as far as I know... I did a lot of research on These zn7xx a few months back... Heck they even share the same frame

Doesn't matter what kind of bike it is, they all work the same way electricly.

If you put in a new stator and a new regulator/rectifier and get the same reading, I'd suspect your meter.
Do check all your connections and grounds. Tell us what the battery volts are with the bike off and what you get at the battery when you get it running.

The R/R should be the culprit here as it is supposed to ground "extra" voltage to the frame. Are you sure it's wired correctly and is the correct R/R for the bike?

Oh, and everyplace I checked shows the 1985 ZN700 as an inline four...

Did find this nice cover photo of the VN 700:

Does seem to be some confusing stuff online.

Thank you guys for the help. And yes the bike is an inline 4 shaft driven only made for 2 years to beat the tariff. The r/r is correct for the year model, and I know the $300 snap-on meter is functiong correctly. I get 12.5vdc when the bike is off, 12.4 with key on, 13.5 as soon as it starts and 17+ when it starts idling. I haven't had a chance to look into the grounds yet. As for the wiring, I'm not to sure on. I'm in the middle of a head swap on another bike, after I'm done with that I'll start by double checking the grounds, they all seemed good, but this time I'll pull them and make sure there good. They all have continuity to the batt.
