Tachometer no workee

Hey Gang,

I'm back, the bike is running, and I'm working on those last few niggling issues. Its an '85, so I guess that's to be expected.

The number one item on my hit list is that my tach doesn't work. When I'm riding, it will bounce every few seconds, but doesn't read. I plan on pulling the headlight and checking the connector, but is there anything else I should be looking for?

Thanks,
--Storm

Me thach no workee neither!

I have an 86. Tach doesnt work, but I dont think it's the connection because I "THINK" the temp gauge (part of the same unit) does work. Sometimes the speedo doesnt work, but if I tap the glass with my finger it'll start working. Tach is always unresponsive.

I think these tachs are pieces of #*&%! Mine does not work either. Temp guage works, tach does not.

Really? My temp gauge doesn't work either. Blown fuse? (Fuel gauge doesn't work either, but I think that is the sensor in the tank.

Check the contacts in the ignition switch, they may be corroded etc.

The switch also has a spring loaded bb sized bearing and sometimes the spring gets too soft to maintain the contact.

My tach started going crazy a while back. I had a whole load of other problems though like the bike would chug a lot as if it was running out of fuel but it was back firing like crazy.

Turned out my R/R was fracked. Replaced it with an electrex one and now the bike runs sweet again.

[edit] except that on Monday, some @!~# stole one of my rear shocks!

Have you checked that any and all wire connections are clean and tight?
Temp could be a bad sensor. The tach, I'm pretty sure, works off one of the coils. Might be a bad connection there?

Ok, but how can I make sure it's a sensor?
