Mysterious mod on my used vn750

Hi folks,

There is a brown wire coming from the R/R and going somewhere to the rear lights. Not sure but it looks like its going to the tail light.

It is not part of the harness. It goes into a little blue aftermarket connector and makes a connection to a red wire which seems to be part of the harness that goes to the tail light.

The original brown wire that is part of the harness is bent back on itself and has a plastic sleeve around it, presumably to protect from accidental contact.

While doing searches on stator problems here I came across a brief mention on a mod which resembles what I found. It was a written by Starman, but it was a fragment of a message.

I tried referencing the original message but my searches came up empty. Can anyone shed any light on this?

I need to test my R/R and am wondering if this mod can screw with results. I would also love to know what the previous owner of my bike intended with this mod.

Thanks alot
Luis

That red wire is the possitive power for your tail light. The previous owner probably had a problem and replaced the wire with whatever they had at the time.

The older VN750's used the brown wire as a sense wire. This is an input wire to the RR that would send 12VDC to the regulator to let it know that the bike was on and to turn the regulator on. The therory behind this is that when the bike is off, the regulator should not be a parasitic drain on the system. With electronics improving as much as they have, this feature became obsolete and unecessary. These days with any new regulator, the brown is not necessary the new Kaw RR's, Electrix and Rick's Regulators don't even have anything wired up to the pin in the plug.

I would not worry about it. Think of the brown wire in the same thought process as nipples on a man. They might have once had a function but now are totally useless and just something to rub raw...

Okay, thanks for the explanation.

The way the Vulcan Verses, where I read the description that sounded like whats on my bike, were going on about it it sounded like a mod one makes to the bike. The wireing certainly doesn't look stock.
