Question Half Power after R&R relocation mod ?

When I started the engine after the R&R relocation mod there was the
odor of gas in the air, then I had to turn up the idle half a turn to keep it runnin, noticed it didn't sound as loud as normal, then after taking it for a spin it was obvious that I was runnin on half power. One cylinder must not be kickin in?

I put some dielectric grease on some of the contacts on the right side.

Any suggestions as to what might of caused the loss of power ?

After doing a Search on "running on one cyclinder" the three things I found that seem plausible are
1. vent line plugged or kinked.

2. Bad contact at coil. ( I didn't unscrew the coil connection and didn't put dielectric on the coil terminals.)

3. Spark Plug cables ( didn't touch them during the R&R relocation.

Check to see that you didn't pull a lead off of the front coil when you were working on the r/r. The power leads are on the left hand side (sitting) of the coil - then the spark leads come up off the front of the coil. Should affect your rear cyl.

A big thanks for the lead. First I found one of the yellow wires to the left of the coil not plugged in...just hangin, but not obviously disconnected.
Then I found a red female wire stairing me in the face, finally found the
male on the coil where it fell off. I can see why it fell off the coil so easy. . .
it's not on very tight, going to have to crimp the female a bit for a tighter
connection.

Lena let out a roar when I turned the key, good feelin.

Learned a lot about the bike from the R&R mod. Now I need to put on the Green Light Trigger, and then am anxious to do the Spline lube.

Rode the dual sport bike to work today, it was a nice change from a street bike. Forgot how quick and nimble the dual sport is compared to the
Vulcan, but I hate adjusting the chain.

Glad it was a simple fix.

As for the dualsport's chain, are you using an o-ring type one?
That's all I ever used on my dirtbikes & the dualsport.
They cost a bit more, but usually would only need one or two adjustings before they, as well as the sprockets, were needing replaced. And that's with some hard off-road pounding on them.

Have the original stock chain on the bike. I suppose the way to check is to look for the small black O rings? Some good info to keep in mind when I need a new chain... tx. I'm going to put a Center stand on ASAP to make the chain adjusting much easier.

Don't be afraid to dielectric grease any fitting. It's the same stuff you're supposed to use on the spark plug tips, etc. It won't weaken the electrical current going through the connection. In fact, it will prevent corrosion that does weaken the current. It just keeps moisture from getting in there and damaging stuff.

Hmm, my Kawi dirtbike came with an o-ring chain stock. I would think the dualsport would too, but maybe not. Yep, should be o-rings at every link on each side of the chain.


One thing to be aware of with those chains though, they can be a bit tough to put the master link on, because you have to squeeze the link together pretty tightly before you're able to get the clip on it to secure it.
And stock ones usually don't have a master link.
