Help with Charging System

Bike has been running great. No issues. Installed a heads up charging system indicator. When start up, blinks red, but when running 40 mph steady green. I patched in at the speedometer light, should I worry?

Nah, When the tach is low (below 2000 rpm) these altinators barely charge. They really start charging above 2500 rpm. If your little led gauge is slow to register it may not show a strong charge as you shift quickly up through the gears until you start holding over 2500 rpm for a few seconds.
A suggestion. Hooking a voltage meter through the spare wires in the headlight bucket. Easy to get to them and a dedicated line.

Just a reminder. The accessory wires in the headlight bucket are always hot. The voltage meter would always be on and drawing power unless a switch is installed.

Is it safe to tap into the running light wires? My front blinkers are not running lights (never have been) but have that wire still ready for use. I am going to put a voltmeter on, and was considering using one of those since it's not always-on but only when the bike is on.

No. At idle, it will flash back and forth between green and red because rpms are just at the point of charge/no charge. If the rpms are lowering to a stop and you apply the brakes and or blinker, it will change it to red. But remember, If it is connected to a hot led to say a light source, there is a drain cause the source is ready going to ground. This reads the volts and are being drain so that doesn't mean the battery isn't charging, just the volts dropped due to an item pulling extra volts. If it's greens above 1500 rpms your system is fine. If the fan comes on at road speeds chances are it will be red. Fan is a volt killer.

the Running lights tie into the headlight... I wouldn't tap into that for a volt meter since the HL draws so many amps, and causes a Voltage drop. For a stock R/R the brown wire for the instrument panel lights would be the perfect choice, since the Stock R/R also reads that same circuit.

For a MOFSET upgraded bike, I would run a relay off of the Accessory wires triggered by said dash lights.
