Desinging new taillight/TS combo for new fender

OK, so i got my new fender. It is the simmilar styling to the magna/vn500 tail fender. I plan to put the tail light inside the fender. and put the license plate below it. I think to keep the lines of the fender, i will put the turnsignals on eitherside of the plate along the edges in a line.

So to tail light design. I was thinking since its large enough to have it split into thirds. The top 3rd stays lit all the time, and the bottom 2/3rds light when braking. I was also looking at doing a fog switch so that on fog an rainy days, the running top third has a part that runs full brightness. I got this idea from the Euro spec. most have one tail light that is brighter when the fog lamps are on.

I havent decided on what type of leds i will use. I will either use some superflux style or some luxeon style..... I will consult some of my nerd buddies on this one... stay tuned!

Sound interesting, and the bright tail when fogs are on is a really good idea.
So, am I reading this right otherwise, you're using all the stock lighting, just mounting it and lighting it differently?

Well, maybe it could be a new class of customs, "stock custom", mostly the same parts, but in different places and slight modifications.
Kinda like with how Edalbris has a rear wheel on the front, original parts, just moved around a bit and made to work.
Have people thinking .... "I know that part is for that bike, but I don't think that's where it's supposed to be"

Maybe I'll just quiet down and wait for pics !

ok here we go, they are uploaded. pardon my lack of artistic skill.

Running mode

Foul weather mode

Brake mode

Turn signal active

here is some estmated energy consumption.
run
1.2 watts with 44 lumens output
foul weather mode
2.7 watts with 100 lumens output
brake
9.5 watts with 251 lumens output

9.5 watts and still brighter then stock!! that is a savings of almost a full 40 watts over the stock tail light. mix that with the already roughly 70 to spare and you can throw in 2 55 watt driving lights. you can do it safely if you swap out the front turn signals too, as they would only burn total of 3 watts vs the 16 stock

Certainly will be different.
My only thought is on the turnsignals. Seems like they might be a little on the small side, unless they're gonna be quite bright.
Otherwise, looks like that'll give the back of the bike a really clean look.

Yeah i am really trying to get the sleek clean look with the fenders. even though the bike will have givi bags on it once i make the bracket, they bracket will be easily removable for the sunday ride, and 5-10 mins to get back to my commuter bike :P

Yeah i am not 100% on the turnsignals. i was lookin at having a round type light pipe, with about 1/3 showing (from the side of the bike to about 15 degs off center, far side) and using 2 luxeon led's amber (about 40 lumens each) per pipe. i may just scratch that idea though and just get some superfluxes though that are showing up in alot of led tail lights now, and just use the amber color. That i guess will be my major test sublect.

humm... now what to do with the front...

I've seen a few bikes with the mirrors that have the turnsignals built into them. Didn't look too bad, and it gets them up away from the headlight, to make them kinda more noticable.
Probably wouldn't be too tough to make a set.
