no tail lights/brake lights

on my vn750 the tail lights dont come on, front work fine. when i apply the hand brake the brake light does not come on, but when i apply my foot brake the brake light comes on perfectly. ive checked the bulbs and the connections under the seat but i haven't checked anything under the left side cover i don't know what under there controlls the tail lights.

The spring that activates the rear brake light switch has come unfastened or the switch is bad. It's just inside the foot brake pedal where it's attached to the frame. Theres a wire going into the top of it with a spring on the bottom to pull the plunger. I also can be adjusted.

I think bamafrankie is saying that the lights work from the foot brake only. Also it seems the tail lights aren't working either. If the front lights work and the rears don't, I would think the problem is towards the tail light assembly, most likely its not a ground issue because I believe the brake light and tail lights share the same ground unless they are ground controlled (meaning turning the switch provides ground to complete the circuit as opposed to power controlled which is turning the switch provides power to complete the circuit). I think if you check out slimvulcan's wiring diagrams you will get a little closer to figuring that part out. As far as the brake light, I'm thinking the front switch is high resistance or bad some way. I know it seems daft to suggest you may have two problems at once, $#*% happens everyday.

Two problems at once is highly possible I have had the bike two months and had other issues, it had been sitting for over two years

The front brake switch can be disassembled & checked but it is not easy as the parts are quite small. I've had mine apart to correct a failure in it & after I put everything back in line it's been fine. You can check the wiring from the switch to eliminate a wiring issue & is ate it to the switch.

As for the rear running light, you might just have a loose connection or the bulb could be bad.
Do you have a volt meter to check for power?

In the past I've had rear lighting problems...found all my issues by pulling the seat....clean up/replace bullet connectors.

I agree, appears you have two issues, grip brake switch issue is one.

What confuses me about this thread is that the OP and another have stated that the tail lights ( Plural ) don't work. We have one tail light. The two other rear ones are directionals only, not running or brake lights. Am I missing something here?

The tail light consists of 2 bulbs....I think that is why he used the plural.

The brake light problem MUST be the switch on the hand lever Or wiring from that switch since the foot lever activates the circuit and the bulbs light up.

The running lights wiring in the rear are all running under the seat. The wiring must be faulty or something.....take a good look at it and wiggle wires with key on to see if they flicker at all. If I recall correctly, the running lights are the red wires, and the brake light are the blue wires. Blak/yellow is ground for both.
