Is it the battery?

Got gas, go to fire the bike up and it doesn't want to start.... kept trying every 30 seconds or so and then the thing backfires.... eventually starts up with various rolls on the throttle and patience. Is it the battery and why does it backfire?

My bike did the EXACT same thing with the wet cell battery I bought it with. AGM battery fixed all my starting issues.

It backfires because the weak spark allows raw fuel into the exhaust.

I have the EverStart from walmart, I think it cost me around $70. Still going strong after 2-2.5 years. Just recently I let my bike sit for around 6 months and the battery still had a charge... I drained it because my coils weren't firing, but after fixing the coils and recharging the battery on a battery tender, the battery was brought back to life and hasn't failed me.

1985 VN700 unknown mileage (over 33K)

AGM Battery
Iridium spark plugs
NGK wires and caps
Relocated R/R
Marbled
