Battery doesn't charge when bike running

I have an '06, factory stock with only one modification, a cig. lighter to keep my smart phone charged. When I run the bike, the battery doesn't charge up and I have to roll start it. I have also noted that when I try to charge the battery while hooked up, it doesn't charge, which it used to do. Also, when I charge the battery when it is not hooked up, it will charge, but when I take off the charger, it starts to dissipate the charge, even with nothing hooked to it. Any and all help would be appreciated. Ty in advance.

Garage
it sounds like an obvious short in the system.

Start by pulling the fuses out of the fuse box (left side of bike under the side cover) and see if it charges and stays charged.

If you can, use a current/amp meter between the battery and the positive lead to see if something is drawing current with the bike off and fuses out.

one by one...replace the fuses and see which circuit is drawing current with the bike off.

Also check your battery connections and grounds around the battery box.

That should get you headed in the right direction.

EDIT: "it starts to dissipate the charge, even with nothing hooked to it."

I guess I missed that part...good one niterider! ...if the battery starts to dissipate just sitting on the bench, then you have a bad battery! An internal short will do this.

Get a Maintenance Free AGM type battery.
