How much is too much?

I know the VN electrical system is feeble.

I just purchased a license plate frame with two LED brake/running light strips at the top and bottom.

I also am purchasing Pick's top case, which has brake lights.

Is it too much to add the license plate frame and have it set to act as running lights and brake lights, along with the top case brake light?

Should I just have the license plate set to function only as a brake light?

Or, I could skip connecting either the plate frame of the top case brake light.

NO!!! 70 WATTS....MAX 70 Amps is huge!! lol....sorry Swagman

if you are running LED's it should be fine...they are so low wattage that it would take a lot of them to even come close to maxing out the system.

Pick ran them on his bike so it should be OK...

I think having extra brake lights make more of an "impression" on cars behind you than tail/running lights that just get brighter. As the trunk light only has on function :

I'd have the Tail box run as just brake lights and have the licence plate lights just be both tail and brake lights.

And you'd need alot of lights back there to exceed the 70w limit.

LED's don't draw much....but then again 70Watts isn't a lot either.

add up the wattage of the lights you are adding and keep it as low as you can.

You can also swap out incandescent bulbs with LED's to lower the overall wattage, but I don't think most LED's are as bright....it's your call.

I added an LED brake light and LED bolts to work with the brake light. I want people behind me to know when I am slowing down without question.

Good point re. effect of lights going from off to on being more noticeable vs. going from dim to brighter.

Thanks for the advice.

Actually, I always thought most stock bikes had enough lights to be seen well from the rear at night. Then I attended the Gathering (2003?) at Table Rock Lake. I remember being in someone's cage following a few other bikes to and from a restaurant at night. It was really dark, and still some of the bikes' lights didn't stand out much. I was surprised, and ever since have lit up my back end!

swagman and kc, thanks for the info. Good to know I should be OK. Not sure if Pick's tail trunk has LEDs or not. Will see. I think the plate frame draws 4 amps, IIRC.

you can see the photos of my setup in my albums....that will give you an idea of how it looks. I took the LED brake concept from another member on here...it may even have been Pick's.
