Battery Acid Damage

Just checked my battery compartment and noted a little corrosion on the positive terminal. Took the batter out to clean the terminal properly and noticed a lot of corrosion on the bottom of the battery case. Decided to remove the battery case to thoroughly clean it.

QUESTION: is it possible to pull out the battery case far enough to get to the underside (where the R/R is located) without disconnecting everything? Or must I pull all the connections first? It would be easier if I could at least pull the case out without disconnecting things first, and then label them prior to disconnecting.

Also, guess I'm buying a new AGM maintenance free battery. Anyone know the best place to buy / best battery to buy? I had a Sears DieHard Gold which I installed 6/08, but I don't think they make the correct model anymore.

I didn't try to pull the battery box out completely, but when I was playing around with the R/R, I was able to unbolt the battery box and tilt it enough to get to the R/R and remove that for inspection.

I imagine you would have to take everything off the Battery box if you are going to remove it, but not sure if it will just lift straight out or not.

If you want to clean and repaint the battery box, you'll need to pull it. Had to on mine, and it's not that hard. OlHoss has posted a link to the Deka batteries on ebay. May have it in his sig, not sure.

I'm keepin' all the left over parts. I'm gonna use 'em to build another bike!

Battery box is fairly easy to remove, just remove R/R assembly from the bottom of it, unbolt it and remove it. I have a MF AGM battery, and am still getting corrosion around the negative cable connection to the battery and frame. Last time I put grease on the connections, and haven't checked them again. Positive connections were clean.

I am a motorcyclist, NOT a biker.

I will look at the actual cost when I get home but I got my battery from autozone using a 20 off coupon I found here. I believe I paid like 45 bux. I'll find it tonight and post all the info.

I was researching batteries for my 1500 and came across the MotoBatt battery and read some reviews and then found this *ongoing battery test: http://boulevardowners.com/cafe/inde...topicID=157926 and was more than impressed with how this battery performed. Not a cheap battery, but it sure ranks with the best I've ever heard of. Just got mine last night and haven't put it in yet, but it comes charged and ready to go, no acid to add etc. The option for electrodes on either side is pretty smart.
If you don't read the test data, the one thing that blew me away was the ability of this battery to start a Triton V10 engine 50 times with no recharge and no sign of dropping off.

Anyway, if you can spend an extra $20-30 bucks, this battery is definitely worth the extra money. And, if you order from here: http://www.impactbattery.com/brands/...l-ytx14ah.html you get free shipping and part of the purchase price goes to charity.

Even if you don't need a battery right now, read the test. It will blow you away!

I disconnected everything and pulled the battery box to remove the r/r 2 or 3 summers ago. I wanted to clean the box well and repaint it anyway. I painted it all black except for the bottom which I painted white (or silver/aluminum??) to try and reflect some of the heat from the belly of goat away from the battery. It was pretty easy to do and keep track of where everything goes.

Thanks all. As usual you're all an absolute wealth of knowledge. Plan on taking the case out, removing all the corrosion and repainting, hopefully this weekend. I just hope my R/R and electrical connections are ok. Plan on cleaning them all off and applying some dielectric grease before refitting them back together. Hope there's no corrosion eating through the goats belly either.

Man am I ticked! This was an AGM maintenance free battery. Not supposed to have these issues.

Well, I did it last weekend! Bought a new YUASA glass mat MF battery & charged her up right. Pulled the battery box out, had to disconnect everything! But I took a wire brush to everything that had corrosion and cleaned it and all the connections with CRC electronic cleaner, repainted the box and reinstalled everything. Applied a generous amount of dielectric grease to all fittings and much to my delight my baby started right up quicker and quieter than ever! Cost me next to nothing as I had a $40 gift card for amazon.com that I applied to the battery. I gained a great deal of respect for the way our baby's have been designed and how pleasurable they are to work on, too.

Thanks for all your input, it really helped.
