Turned the key to park, and it died.
This is the short version.
Last night going down the highway and my buddy's Harley died. voltage went to zero. He pulls over onto the medianand I , being carefull of traffic, pull in behind him and hit the flashers.
every few minuites I would come over and rev the bike to keep the battery charged. Every thing was great. Then I remembered seing a post on this forum about the Park position on the ignition swtch. Hey, great idea I think! isnt that supposed to turn the headlight off yet keep the tail lights on?
I turned the key to park and everything died imediately. No engine, no headlight , no running lights, no dash lights no horn. NOTHING.
I curse, then pray, then curse some more.
after several minuets The dash lights would come on veeerrrryyyy sllooowwwly. Not even close to enough power to start the bike.
Two tow trucks and $85 later me and my buddy were both at home.
Checked this morning and all the fuses on the junction box were ok. had the battery on the trickle charger all night, green light this morning for fully charged, turn the key and hit the starter,,,,,,,,, nothing.
Went and had the battery tested and it was DEAD. new battery , she started right up. Checked the stator, 60 something volts on each set of wires, warmed it up and got 14.something volts at the battery at 3000 rpm.
What the heck happened??????

umm... your battery stopped working at a funny time...?
I agree with Ceal...timing just sucked bigtime!
Example: got up one saturday morning awhile back...loaded up back of truck with some trash and scrap. Cranked truck just fine..no hint at all. Went to dump..got up on top of the unload ramp(which is busy on saturday mornings), turned off truck..unloaded trash..got back in truck..turned key...nada..nothing...zip!! 5 more trucks behind me..waiting in line. Luckily since I was on the ramp..I just put it in neutral and gave it a big shove and coasted off the ramp to a safe place to park. Then had to call a buddy to get me another battery.
It just happens...

Park turns off the motor, the headlight, but the tail light and front turn/running lights stay on.
It is possible you have a short in the Park circuit...guess I would see what happens with the new battery.
You did get an AGM battery right?

I have had bad luck with Batteries Plus. Between friends I have seen 4 batteries go bad.
Mine was the only one that was still in warrenty. the other 2 were 1 month out and they would not do anything.
I will never get one from them again!

Mine (Scorpion) from them went south after about 14 months IIRC. Deka's been going strong since then.
I'm keepin' all the left over parts. I'm gonna use 'em to build another bike!

The question is , does your "park" position work properly now?
