coil mod

I have followed the thread, I removed my 3 screws from the cover, but cant get the cover plate off..........dont want to break it, anyone know a good way, I tried tapping it with a rubber mallet but no help. Should I pry it with a flat screwdriver?.........I dont think its ever been removed.......

Keep whacking it. (lol).

Be easy with a screwdriver. It has an o-ring. Someone may have put gasket material on it.

Let me see if i can explain this well:

-while looking directly at the plate, try to put a flathead on the left or bottom side, and try to use the frame as a pivot point. Try to apply pressure to the side of the plate while hitting it around the perimeter with the mallet.

Be patient. It will come off.

yea, mine was like that. stuck. mine had never been removed, and the o-ring was stuck to both the cover and the case, a little prying and it popped right off

Thanks for the post. I hope to make time for this project soon. Are these pics available elsewhere? I can't seem to assess any of them.

Pickup coil clearance

Well I spose I should try this mod. My 85 is acting like a jerk. Did the blowback thing, new AGM battery. She start right up cold, runs great until the temp needle gets halfway or over. Wont start easy at these temps, misfires mid throttle or hiccup as I call it. Fan comes on and I am wondering if it steals voltage away from the ignition as it is pretty freakin old. But it not on when I try to restart so nix that assumption.

just performed this mod after reading about this years ago. used a dremel to modify the bracket and got shavings all over the place, total PITA when they stuck to the pickups. microfiber cloths are your friend!

finally got it modified properly so I could set it snug to .020", cleaning the Oring and gasket, then refitting everything and doing a test start it seemed to start more easily and was definitely a little happier to rev considering how it was cold no choke. we'll see after I test ride it but so far it seems successful. thanks again, OP
