Help with new plug wires

New 1991 Vulcan 750 owner.......I just bought his bike for $700 and love it but am now doing some work to get it up to speed. I have went to the gel battery and bought new plug wires. What are the ends of these supposed to look like? Are they just cut sraight off flat or have some of the wire sticking out of the end that goes into the coil? Also am having trouble with bike backfiring and shutting off when I hit the throttle......carbs need adjusting maybe? Where does the choke cable attach to the carbs also...mine is disconnected. Thanks for any help. Look forward to enjoying riding very soon.
