Is my R/R dying?

I've been noticing lately that my lights - specifically my headlight and taillight - are "pulsing". Not a flicker, but like the brightness is going up and down, like the voltage is fluctuating. I'm guessing it means that the R/R is starting to go bad? Or is it something else?

More likely a poor contact somewhere. One good candidate is the ignition switch. Whatever it is, you should fix is, as sooner or later the bad contact heats up enough to fail totally.

A voltmeter connected directly to the battery would tell if it is a charging problem or a contact problem.

My bike was doing the same thing last summer, a volt meter should warn you of problems earlier. Mine was the R/R, I replaced it with a better quality and it's run great since.

To help with the diagnosis, I replaced the stator about 5000 miles ago, so I doubt that's it. I also now have a Battery Tender, hooked it up yesterday, and it took about half the day to get full. So seems like the charging system isn't working quite right as well. Does that further point to the R/R?

One common problem has been the bullet connectors from the stator to the R/R.

My VN750 behaved the same way. At first the lights would go dim then bright. Eventually, on a full charge the bike would run good for about 15 minutes then stall when the RPM's dropped. I tie wrapped up a digital voltmeter to the bars, ran the leads back to the battery, took it for a test drive. I could see the voltage go from good to worse. Did the ohm check on the R/R and it checked bad. Replaced the R/R and the problem was solved.

I had taken the bike to two different dealers and they misdiagnosed the problem. All they look at is the battery charges and starts the bike but will not run the bike long enough for the problem to show up.

As already stated, it is a good idea to go through and check all your connections. I put dielectric grease on mine.

Clean ALL your ground connections. My 95 did the same as yours, cleaning the dirty grounds fixed it.
