push starter button, nothing happens

Hi All- Tim here from Seattle area. love this forum- everything you want to know...

Need some help...

Year- 1995
miles 22K +

I push the starter button and nothing happens. I hear a small little 'click' 1 time up front down low, but cannot determine where it is coming from. If I turn the key off and back on, and press the button, it will click 1 time again. Tonight I tried again, it turned over a few times, and in the middle it stopped. After a few more tries, it turned over and started.

Battery and connections are good, all fuses are good. Thoughts? could it be the starter button? Is there a starter cylenoid (sp?) on these that could be bad? Starter itself? I'd like to troubleshoot/test before I go tearing into anything, starting with the easiest thing first.

HELP! I live in Seattle area and get the occasional day of dry weather to ride in and want to be ready.

Thanks guys! If there is ever a Seattle area get together, I'll buy a few a few...

Is that the reading when you try to crank it, or just sitting there with the ignition off. Did you check your ground?

Check the engine ground too. I had a battery that showed full voltage and it took me a while to discover it had zero amps! Was doing the same click but absolutely no crank.

I'm keepin' all the left over parts. I'm gonna use 'em to build another bike!

this happened to me the other day and it turned out the started relay fell out of the socket (i have slims modified JB)

Same thing happened to me 2 summers ago. Trying to start bike with old wet cell after charging it up. Showed ~12.5 volts just before pressing the starter button. Nothing, nada, zip. Checked voltage again and it had dropped to 7 volts. Probably froze the battery the previous winter as I didn`t do a very good job of preparing the bike for winter storage after my accident in 2008.

There are several factors in determining starter problems. First check the voltage as you did, then check for loose or corroded connections. The starter could be bad, or have a bad solenoid. Check the brushes and stator on the starter itself. If the brushes are bad, it will take too much voltage to turn the starter over, and thus the clicking. It's a pretty straightforward deal to clean them and reapir them if necessary.
If you can, have someone hit the starter button while you check for voltage at the starter, and see if there is a major drop.
